Amid increasing military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the critical importance of ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. Yui highlighted Taiwan’s proactive steps to enhance its defense spending, emphasizing that the island is steadfast in its commitment to strengthening its ability to address potential security threats. He made it clear that while external support is valuable, Taiwan must prioritize investing in its own defense preparedness.
A substantial US$14 billion weapons package for Taiwan is currently under review by the U.S. administration. This proposed package has garnered backing from lawmakers in Washington who view Taiwan’s defense requirements as increasingly urgent, given China’s growing military activities in the region. Yui has pointed out that the military assistance from the U.S. should be proportionate to the level of threat posed by China, which has been conducting frequent military exercises, deploying warships, and operating aircraft near Taiwan.
Yui reiterated Taiwan’s objective to safeguard its security and democratic system through defensive measures. He expressed that the scale of military support should align with the level of threat, citing Chinese military maneuvers as a significant concern. Taiwan remains dedicated to maintaining its security amidst these challenges.
U.S. officials have reaffirmed that Washington’s policy regarding Taiwan remains unchanged, and that supporting Taiwan’s security continues to be a pivotal aspect of the bilateral relationship. Despite ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan has voiced its confidence in the enduring partnership with the United States.
