As Typhoon Bavi approaches, New Taipei City has initiated precautionary evacuations in several mountainous regions due to the impending threat of severe rainfall and potential landslides. Mayor Hou You-yi has instructed authorities to prioritize moving residents from high-risk areas, especially in Wulai District, where there is an estimated landslide probability exceeding 90%. These evacuations are mandated to be completed by 6 p.m.
The typhoon is anticipated to bring significant rainfall, with weather officials predicting over 500 mm in the mountainous territories and along New Taipei’s northern coastline through Saturday. In response to these forecasts, landslide alerts have also been issued for additional districts, including Sanxia, Pinglin, Shiding, Xindian, Xizhi, and Shenkeng, as a precautionary measure.
As of Thursday afternoon, Typhoon Bavi was positioned approximately 650 kilometers east of Taiwan’s southern tip, exhibiting maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour. This has prompted authorities to emphasize the importance of vigilance among residents in the affected areas.
Officials are urging all residents to adhere strictly to evacuation orders and safety guidelines to minimize risk and ensure public safety during this challenging time. The cooperative efforts of the city’s emergency management teams and the community will be crucial in navigating the impacts of Typhoon Bavi.
