The United States has unveiled a new tariff policy targeting drones and their components, imposing levies of up to 100% on certain imports due to national security concerns and a strategic move to diminish reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. This decision specifically impacts unmanned aircraft systems, focusing on larger drones weighing over 25 kilograms and those equipped with capabilities relevant to national security, such as thermal imaging cameras and docking stations. While these products will incur a 100% tariff, smaller drones will be subjected to a 25% tariff.
The newly imposed tariffs will also affect drone imports from several key trading partners, including the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan, which will face a 15% tariff. Imports from the United Kingdom will encounter a 10% tariff, provided that the originating hardware, software, and technology come from these specified countries or the US itself. Most of these tariffs are scheduled to be implemented starting September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country, all while aiming to reduce dependency on overseas suppliers. This move comes in response to China’s dominant role in the global drone market, where Shenzhen-based DJI holds a substantial share of the US commercial drone segment. The company has been subject to US restrictions due to national security apprehensions.
US authorities have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose risks related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. The Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. The introduction of these tariffs occurs against a backdrop of ongoing trade and technology tensions between the US and China, with the latter also implementing restrictions affecting drone exports to the US and taking action against several American firms.
