The European Parliament has underscored the importance of Taiwan as a strategic partner in safeguarding information integrity and enhancing civil defense, a move likely to bolster cooperation between Taiwan and the EU in addressing modern security challenges. This recognition comes amidst rising concerns over hybrid threats and information manipulation, areas where Taiwan is seen as a leader due to its technological prowess and resilience.

The European Parliament’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield highlighted Taiwan’s significant contributions to countering information manipulation and advancing media pluralism and human rights. Taiwan’s experience with China’s gray-zone tactics has prompted the island nation to develop comprehensive civil defense and resilience strategies, which the report suggests could serve as a model for the European Union’s own preparedness initiatives.

In response to the report, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) expressed appreciation for the recognition and reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with the EU and other East Asian partners such as Japan and South Korea. The focus will be on enhancing measures against hybrid threats and ensuring the protection of critical infrastructure, including undersea communication cables.

The report also emphasized Taiwan’s role in the realm of high-tech development, recognizing the island’s capabilities in dealing with foreign information manipulation and hybrid attacks. The call for increased cooperation and regular exchanges between the EU and Taiwan reflects a mutual interest in securing democratic values against external threats.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, Taiwan’s proactive approach to security and information integrity positions it as a valuable ally for the EU. The ongoing collaboration aims to support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, reinforcing the shared democratic values that underpin these international partnerships.
