Taiwan has expressed appreciation for a recent European Parliament recommendation that opposes China’s efforts to limit Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and exchanges. This move underscores the shared democratic values and existing economic, trade, and technological ties between Taiwan and the European Union.

The recommendation from the European Parliament reaffirms support for cross-strait peace and criticizes China’s alleged use of pressure to curtail Taiwan’s international engagement. It further raises concerns about the extraterritorial application of Chinese laws, signaling a strong stance against unilateral changes to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion.

Highlighting Taiwan’s significant role in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, the European Parliament called for enhanced cooperation with Taiwan in sectors such as semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security. The recommendation also encourages the EU to prepare for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or another framework to bolster collaboration on critical supply chains.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the European Parliament’s support and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with the EU and other like-minded partners. The ministry stated that Taiwan would work to strengthen technological partnerships, protect critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.

This development highlights the growing significance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and ongoing concerns about the security of global technology and trade networks. Taiwan’s proactive stance in fostering international cooperation reflects its commitment to maintaining regional stability and enhancing its international presence.
