South Korea Uses Tech to Extend Lower Tariffs on Taiwanese Fruit Imports

In a move to bolster its agricultural trade relations, South Korea has decided to extend its preferential tariff program for Taiwanese fruit imports. This initiative, which significantly reduces import duties on bananas, pineapples, and mangoes, will now remain in effect until August 15. Originally set to expire at the end of June, the program aims to stabilize food prices by lowering the tariffs from 30% to a mere 5%.

The extension comes at a strategically important time, coinciding with Taiwan’s peak mango export season. Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture has welcomed the decision, highlighting that it will not only support the country’s fruit exports but also cater to the South Korean consumer demand. This timing is particularly beneficial as it precedes the full supply levels of domestic mango production in South Korea.

Officials from Taiwan emphasized the importance of this extension, noting it aligns perfectly with the harvest season of their mangoes. As part of their commitment to boosting overseas sales, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to continue its efforts in enhancing the quality of Taiwanese mangoes. This will be achieved through various quality improvement programs, promotional campaigns, and strategic partnerships with international retailers.

The Taiwanese mango export market has shown robust performance this year, with South Korea remaining a significant destination for these exports. The extended tariff relief is expected to further enhance the reach and competitiveness of Taiwanese fruits in the South Korean market, reinforcing Taiwan’s position as a key player in the region’s agricultural sector.
