China is set to broaden its import spectrum during its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), focusing on advanced technology, crucial industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. This initiative, highlighted by the General Administration of Customs (GAC), aims to support the country’s industrial modernization, stimulate domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a broader selection of global quality products. Additionally, China intends to diversify its import sources, expanding beyond its traditional partners.
Customs officials have observed significant growth in both imports and exports during the first half of the year, with imports outpacing exports due to increased domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. In response, China plans to further open its market to overseas agricultural and food products, simplifying quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, bringing its imported food sources to over 150 countries and regions.
Experts in China view this strategy as a testament to the nation’s commitment to enhancing market openness, diversifying trade activities, and fostering stronger global economic ties. They assert that by boosting imports, China will satisfy the growing demand for industrial upgrades and high-quality consumer goods, simultaneously creating new opportunities for international exporters.
Officials anticipate that China’s expanding consumer market will present significant opportunities for global businesses as domestic consumption continues its upward trajectory. This expansion aligns with China’s broader objectives of encouraging industrial progress and sustaining economic growth by integrating a more extensive range of international products into its economy.
