Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea is continuing its operations without disruption, despite a directive from the Papua New Guinea government to shut down the mission, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. The office, led by Taiwanese representative Chiu Chen-yu, remains in regular contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Papua New Guinea.

The closure order was announced by Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko in July. Taiwan has expressed dissatisfaction with this decision, pointing out that they were not consulted beforehand. In response, Taiwan has lodged a formal protest against the move.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry is actively preparing for various scenarios and remains committed to maintaining dialogue with Papua New Guinea’s authorities. The ministry also plans to seek international support to foster discussions aimed at keeping the representative office open.

This situation highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions, as Taiwan continues to assert its presence in the region amid challenges. The outcome of this diplomatic effort remains uncertain, as Taiwan navigates the complexities of maintaining international relations while facing pressure from other nations.
