Taiwan Unveils Advanced Chiang Kung Missile for Cutting-Edge T-Dome Defense

The National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) in Taiwan has unveiled the technical specifications for the Chiang Kung missile, also known as Tien Chien IV. This missile is a planned high-altitude interceptor and will be a crucial element of Taiwan’s envisioned “T-Dome” integrated air defense system. The Chiang Kung is specifically designed to target and intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes reaching up to 70 kilometers.

This advanced system utilizes a land-based vertical launch mechanism coupled with a two-stage solid-propellant rocket. It features vectored thrust technology aimed at enhancing maneuverability in high-altitude scenarios. According to NCSIST, the radar capabilities of the Chiang Kung allow it to detect a variety of targets and engage multiple tactical ballistic missiles simultaneously, even when faced with electronic warfare challenges. Additionally, the system is equipped with a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, which is engineered to operate effectively in conditions impacted by electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming.

The introduction of the Chiang Kung missile is expected to fill a vital gap in Taiwan’s current air defense capabilities, particularly in the realm of high-altitude interception. It is designed to work in conjunction with existing air-defense mechanisms as part of the proposed T-Dome network. However, the development of this missile program encounters financial uncertainties, as it was not included in Taiwan’s special defense budget.

In response to the budgetary omission, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense is pursuing additional funds through a supplementary budget. Officials have cautioned that any delays in securing the necessary funding could have significant repercussions, potentially impacting the acquisition timeline and the overall progress of the T-Dome network’s development.
