During a recent diplomatic tour, Nordic leaders have called upon China to leverage its influence in helping to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This request was made during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, with the aim of encouraging China to advocate for peace and negotiations.
In Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of China supporting ceasefire efforts and initiating substantive peace talks. He also expressed concerns about China’s ongoing economic relations with Russia, particularly through energy purchases. Echoing this sentiment, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide noted that Nordic countries collectively urged China to persuade Russia to engage in unconditional negotiations.
The discussions with Wang Yi extended beyond the Ukraine conflict, addressing several key areas such as trade, climate change cooperation, renewable energy initiatives, and Arctic affairs. Norwegian officials advocated for collaboration with China where mutual interests align, while simultaneously raising issues related to national security, cybersecurity, and human rights. Particular concerns were highlighted regarding China’s actions in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, as well as its growing influence in the Arctic region.
