Taiwan Advances Naval Defense with Mass Production of Hai Chien II Missiles

Taiwan is embarking on a significant modernization of its naval air defense systems by aiming to produce between 1,200 and 1,376 Hai Chien II missiles. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the capabilities of its surface fleet and standardize its missile systems. The Hai Chien II, a naval adaptation of the Tien Chien II air-to-air missile, recently completed successful live-fire testing off the coast of southern Taiwan, marking a crucial step forward in this defense upgrade.

The introduction of the Hai Chien II missiles is set to replace outdated air defense weapons on Taiwan’s naval vessels, which defense officials have deemed insufficient against contemporary aircraft and emerging aerial threats. According to military estimates, the navy requires 688 of these missiles to fully arm its current and planned warships, which include Kang Ding-class frigates, Tuo Chiang-class corvettes, next-generation light frigates, and Yushan-class amphibious landing platform docks.

To ensure readiness during prolonged combat operations, military logistics assessments suggest maintaining stockpiles that are 1.5 to 2 times the number needed for operational launch systems. This logistical strategy has led to the higher production target for the Hai Chien II missiles. Designed for integration with ship-based vertical launch systems, these missiles promise enhanced range and comprehensive 360-degree air defense coverage for the vessels.

In addition to producing the Hai Chien II missiles, Taiwan is also upgrading its Kang Ding-class frigates with new launch systems capable of deploying multiple missiles. Future warship designs are being developed with the Hai Chien II as a central component of their air defense capabilities. This overhaul of Taiwan’s maritime defense systems reflects the nation’s commitment to bolstering its security in response to increasing military activities and challenges in the region.
