The recent opening of the Shengji Tunnel in Taipei promises to significantly cut travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the Nangang District. The NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project connects Zhongxiao East Road with the National Biotechnology Research Park’s access road, offering a more efficient route between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
Spanning approximately 824 meters, with 716 meters being the tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is expected to reduce peak-hour travel between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station from 15–20 minutes to under 10 minutes. This improvement is anticipated to enhance the daily commute for many, especially those working in the burgeoning biotechnology sector.
The tunnel not only facilitates a quicker commute but also serves as a vital alternative route during floods and other emergencies, particularly when Academia Road is affected. In addition to vehicular traffic, the tunnel accommodates pedestrians and cyclists, promoting a more inclusive transportation environment.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, a significant hub for the biotechnology industry since its opening in 2018, has attracted over 2,600 researchers and professionals. The park’s development has contributed to the growth of biomedical research and related activities in the region, further emphasizing the importance of efficient transportation infrastructure like the Shengji Tunnel in supporting such economic and scientific endeavors.
