In a move to bolster their long-standing relationship, Taiwan and Belize have signed two agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. The agreements were finalized during Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung’s three-day visit to Belize, where he engaged in discussions with Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca.
The key highlight of the visit was the signing of a letter of intent between the University of Belize and Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund. This agreement seeks to establish the Taiwan-Caribbean Academy, which will be headquartered at the University of Belize. The academy’s focus will be on promoting technical and vocational education, sustainable tourism, and economic cooperation among Taiwan’s diplomatic partners in the Caribbean region. Taiwanese universities are set to play a significant role in developing the curriculum and faculty planning for this initiative.
Additionally, Taiwan and Belize have entered into an agreement concerning the training of diplomatic staff. This agreement is designed to enhance the professional skills and capabilities of Belize’s foreign service personnel, further strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
These agreements underscore Taiwan’s commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with its allies in the Caribbean, particularly through educational and professional development initiatives. The collaboration between the University of Belize and Taiwanese institutions is expected to create new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building in the region.
