In a development that could further delay their arrival, two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets recently purchased by Taiwan from the United States had to unexpectedly return to Hawaii shortly after takeoff. These single-seat aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, initially departed from Hickam Field in Hawaii. However, they soon made an about-turn and landed back at their starting point. The specific reason behind this sudden return is yet to be disclosed.
Taiwan has placed an order for 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 fighter jets to bolster its defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern region. These aircraft are destined for Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, where they will be operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing. The jets were scheduled to fly from Hawaii to Guam, where they would refuel and resupply before proceeding to Taiwan. The journey from Hawaii to Guam typically takes about eight hours and 20 minutes, followed by an additional four hours and 40 minutes from Guam to Taiwan.
The initial aircraft from this purchase was anticipated to arrive in Taiwan this week. However, the delivery timeline has already faced setbacks, originally planned for 2023, but delayed due to the relocation and restart of the production line as well as supply-chain disruptions. This latest incident could potentially add to the delay.
The remaining aircraft from this purchase are expected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028, as Taiwan continues to enhance its air defense capabilities amid regional security concerns. The ongoing developments underscore the complexities of international military procurement and logistics, particularly during a time of global supply chain challenges.
